Herts Junior Badminton Association

Tournaments

Each season we organise tournaments for all levels of junior players. Our aim is to give young players of all abilities the opportunity to play badminton in a safe, competitive and fun environment, against competitors of the same age.

The types of tournaments we run are explained below.

For our ‘closed tournaments’ , players will have a minimum of 3 games at each tournament, with more if they keep winning.

If you run a club or teach in a school where badminton is played why not bring along a group. It’s a great way to keep fit and socialise!

If you need any further information, contact Ronnie Goode on 07748 743214, or e-mail .

CLOSED TOURNAMENTS

These are tournaments where players can enter to play singles, doubles and mixed matches. Children born in, living in, attending school in or playing at a junior badminton club in Hertfordshire, or attending a school affiliated to HJBA are eligible to sign up.

All tournaments for the season are listed in the table below.
To participate in any closed tournament, players must complete the online Closed Tournament Entry Form, which will be accessible via the link provided in the corresponding row of the table closer to the tournament date.

Full terms and conditions for our Closed tournaments can be downloaded here.

To make sure you enter the correct age group(s), please check the form carefully or use the age group checker tab below.

Closed ENTRY-LEVEL (B) TOURNAMENTS

Our ‘Closed’ entry-level singles tournaments are open to Hertfordshire junior players who have not previously been selected for a county squad. These tournaments are particularly suitable for school and club players with less experience (county players do not play in these events). However, players are welcome to enter any competition at all, in their age group or above.

These tournaments are open to children born in, living in, attending school in or playing at a junior badminton club in Hertfordshire, or attending a school affiliated to HJBA.

To participate in any closed tournament, players must complete the online Closed Tournament Entry Form, which will be accessible via the link provided in the corresponding row of the table closer to the tournament date.

OPEN TOURNAMENTS

These are Badminton England sanctioned ‘Open’ tournaments, which are open to players from anywhere in the country.

To enter open tournaments, visit the Badminton England Tournament website.

The ‘Open’ junior tournaments that Hertfordshire are running this season can be viewed in the table below.

Primary Schools Team Tournament

We invite schools to enter a team of three in this exciting tournament for Year 6 and below players. The tournament is open to schools located within Hertfordshire, and to those that have affiliated to HJBA. More than one team can be entered but please make sure that there are enough adults or experienced team captains to look after the teams.

  • Each team will consist of 3, 4 or 5 players (open or all girls), any three of whom must play in each match
  • Players should be in Year 6 or below
  • Each match will consist of one game of singles game and one game of doubles.
  • Each game will be played to 11, 15 or 21 points, depending on entry size.
  • Each team will play at least four matches
  • Matches will be played with plastic shuttles
  • Trophies and medals will be awarded to the top three teams in each of the open players, girls and combined (open players and girls results) competitions.

This is a good introduction to competitive play for young players. It is a friendly tournament, which we hope will encourage fair play and team spirit.

Next tournament:

  • Sunday 19th April 2026
  • Coaching 09.30 am – 11.00 am
  • Tournament 11.15 am – 4.00 pm (approx)
  • Location Herts Sports Village, Mosquito Way, Hatfield AL10 9EU

Coaching : The format is designed to cater for all ages and abilities, but it is particularly suitable for newer players and those receiving limited coaching. We will have several experienced coaches working with the players. The players will be divided into small groups and each group will move round to the coaches to learn a variety of skills. Participants do not have to be part of a team competing in the team tournament.

Entry : An entry form is available to download in the table below.

CLUB & SCHOOLS TOURNAMENT

This is a team tournament for non-county players, each team consisting of at least 4 players. Players should be aged 12 or under (born in 2014 or later) and must not be members of the current or previous season’s county squads. Matches will consist of one game each of Open singles, Girls’ singles, Open Doubles, Girls’ Doubles, and Mixed Doubles.
