HJBA Closed and Open Tournaments

Each season HJBA organises tournaments for all levels of junior players, including:
  • Badminton England sanctioned 'Open' tournaments, which are open to players from throughout the country
  • 'Closed' singles, doubles and mixed tournaments, open to all Hertfordshire junior players
  • 'Closed' B Grade singles tournaments, open to Hertfordshire junior players who have not previously been selected for a county squad.

This season's full tournament schedule can be downloaded HERE. A plan of the Hertfordshire University de Havilland Campus (HSV) can be downloaded HERE.

How to Enter:

  • Open Tournaments - through the Badminton England site HERE.
  • Closed Tournaments - by completing and sending in the Closed Tournament entry form available to download HERE. These tournaments are open to children born in, living in, attending school in or playing at a junior badminton club in Hertfordshire, or attending a school affiliated to HJBA.

This season, we are running 8 age group tournaments (U11, U13, U15, U17, U19, U11B, U13B and U15B), making up 24 events that are open to children born in, living in or attending schools in the county. Please note that we use the same age qualifications as for Badminton England's tournaments. BE has a helpful diagram which shows which birth years qualify for which age group and can be viewed HERE but a quick summary is listed below:

Our aim is to give children of all abilities the opportunity to play badminton in a safe, competitive and fun environment, against competitors of the same age.

Players will have a minimum of 3 games, with more if they keep on winning.

Our B singles competitions (5th January 2025 and 2nd February 2025) are particularly suitable for school and club players with less experience (county players do not play in these events). However players are welcome to enter any competition at all, in their age group or above.

If you run a club or teach in a school where badminton is played why not bring along a group. It's a great way to keep fit and socialise!!!

Entry forms, and a full list of this season's tournaments can be downloaded from the links above or the downloads page.

Badminton Team Tournament for Primary School Children

Please click HERE to obtain an entry form.

  • Sunday 6th April 2025
  • Coaching 09.30 am - 11.00 am
  • Tournament 11.15 am - 4.00 pm (approx)

Team Championship: We invite you to enter a team of three in this exciting tournament for Year 6 and below players. The tournament is open to schools located within Hertfordshire, and to those that have affiliated to HJBA. More than one team can be entered but please make sure that there are enough adults or experienced team captains to look after the teams.

  • Each team will consist of 3, 4 or 5 players (all boys or all girls), any three of whom can play in each match
  • Each match will consist of one game of singles game and one game of doubles.
  • Each game will be played to 11, 15 or 21 points, depending on entry size.
  • Each team will play at least four matches
  • Matches will be played with plastic shuttles
  • Trophies, medals or certificates will be awarded to the top three teams in each of the boys, girls and combined (boys and girls results) competitions.

This is a good introduction to competitive play for young players.
It is a friendly tournament, which we hope will encourage fair play and team spirit.

Coaching : The format is designed to cater for all ages and abilities, but it is particularly suitable for newer players and those receiving limited coaching. We will have several experienced coaches working with the players. The players will be divided into small groups and each group will move round to the coaches to learn a variety of skills. Participants do not have to be part of a team competing in the team tournament.
